Gas stations and convenience stores operate for long hours, often with outdoor pumps, payment counters, deliveries, customer parking, and periods when only a small team is on duty. A useful CCTV plan considers the whole site and the operating procedures around it—not just the number of cameras installed.
Review the key zones
Check that cameras provide clear, usable views of pump islands, entrances and exits, payment counters, forecourt approaches, delivery areas, and other business-critical locations. Avoid positioning cameras where glare, darkness, weather, signage, or obstructions make the image difficult to interpret.
Pay attention to opening and closing
Opening and closing routines can involve cash handling, unlocking doors, checking the forecourt, and preparing equipment. Document the steps that matter for your business and define what should happen if a step is missed or an unusual event is observed. Do not rely on CCTV alone to verify every task.
Set clear after-hours procedures
For sites that close overnight, decide which events need immediate escalation: for example, a person attempting to force entry, visible damage, or activity in a clearly restricted area. Write down who should be contacted, in what order, and what staff should do if the primary contact is unavailable.
Keep clocks and records accurate
Correct camera timestamps help managers compare video with receipts, alarm logs, and incident reports. Check camera time settings periodically, account for daylight-saving changes where relevant, and record any known clock discrepancy so investigators are not misled.
Prepare a concise incident report
A useful report includes the site, camera or area, date and time shown by the system, a neutral description of what was observed, actions taken, people notified, and whether relevant footage was preserved. Separate direct observations from assumptions and retain footage according to policy and law.
