A CCTV system can record events for later review, while a live monitoring service adds a process for observing camera feeds and notifying designated contacts when agreed events occur. These approaches can work together, but they serve different purposes and create different expectations.
Recording-only CCTV
With recording-only systems, footage is usually reviewed after someone reports an incident or a scheduled review is performed. This can help establish a timeline and provide evidence, subject to image quality, retention, access, and local rules. The limitation is that a person may not review the event while it is happening.
Live remote monitoring
Live monitoring involves authorised staff observing available camera feeds according to an agreed schedule or operating procedure. If an event meets the agreed criteria, staff can notify the client or follow the site’s escalation plan. Actual coverage depends on the contracted hours, camera availability, connection quality, and the service’s defined procedures.
Questions to ask before choosing
Ask what hours are covered, which cameras are included, what counts as an alert, how contacts are reached, how incidents are documented, and how video is securely shared. Clarify whether monitoring is continuous or event-based, how outages are handled, and what the provider cannot see or guarantee.
Neither approach replaces site safety planning
CCTV is not a substitute for alarms, locks, trained staff, emergency services, or a written response plan. A monitoring provider should not promise that every incident will be detected: cameras can be blocked, feeds can fail, and some events may be outside the field of view.
Privacy and access matter
Limit access to authorised people, use strong account security, agree on retention and deletion, and establish a process for sharing clips. Make sure signage, employee notices, and any required permissions meet the laws that apply at the site.
